Sewage Sludge Treatment

The disintegration of excess sludge as an effective means of reducing the amount of sludge to be disposed of is becoming increasingly important. Among existing techniques, ozone achieves a very high degree of disintegration in sewage sludge and is already being used in waste water treatment plants on an industrial scale.
By using ozone the cell walls of the microorganisms are destroyed and the cell constituents are released. The disintegrated sludge then serves as an external C-source for denitrification. Apart from the reduction of the surplus sludge amount, a considerable improvement in the sludge settling behaviour as well as an avoidance of foam formation was shown during the operation of the system.
The special feature of using ozone compared to mechanical disintegration techniques is that tough to degrade materials are partially oxidised by the ozonisation in addition, and are thus opened to biological disintegration. In this way the use of ozone enables high disintegration degrees of up to 35 %.
30 - 40 % less sludge = lower disposal costs
A sludge reduction of approx. 30 - 40% is possible by using ozone and thus also a cost reduction in the area of sludge disposal. A reduction of up to 60% sludge proportion has already been achieved in individual cases. Xylem has carried out successful projects with WEDECO ozone systems for this purpose in local and industrial purification plants.
