The chlorine issue
Disinfection with chlorine was the favoured method for many decades. However, scientific studies show that chemical disinfection methods are associated with health and ecological disadvantages.
Comprehensive safety measures have to be taken when chlorine is used. The residues and by-products found in water that has been disinfected with chlorine have grave consequences. Some of them cause cancer and other serious diseases. Often they cause odour nuisance or affect the taste of the water. Moreover, some pathogens like Legionella pneumophila or Giardia intestinalis have developed resistance to chlorine, so effective disinfection requires increasing amounts of chlorine. As a result, undesirable side effects also increase.
Using alternative disinfection methods like UV-light or ozone the employment of chlorine can be reduced significantly or even replaced.
