Overfishing and at the same time rising nutritional requirements have made industrial fish farming a pillar in the foodstuffs industry. Large freshwater or saltwater ecological systems with optimal living conditions for aquatic animals are the requirement. UV disinfection and ozone oxidation are ideal treatment processes for the water quality which is necessary for this.
Waters in fish farming enterprises and aquariums are prone to contamination due to viruses, bacteria and parasites in the water. In addition, the relatively dense and homogeneous fishing resource leads to a very high infection rate. In extreme cases the effects can lead to the closure of the enterprise and the extinction of the fish.
Disinfection without chemicals
UV light and ozone are ideally suited for the treatment of freshwater and process water in circulation systems. The great advantage over other techniques is in the environmentally friendly way in which both technologies work. No chemicals are put into the water and the natural characteristics of the water are also preserved. In addition, a decrease in number of germs not only increases safety – the fish death rate also decreases overall.

Customer-orientated WEDECO UV systems
WEDECO UV systems have been used for many years in fish farming enterprises with the most varied of water qualities. During disinfection with UV light, microorganisms are inactivated by a photochemical reaction between the UVC light and the genetic information carrier (DNA) of the pathogen within seconds. The pathogen cannot multiply any longer and dies.
Customer-orientated systems are part of the specification, for example with fully automatic wiping systems for water rich in humins. There are special designs out of the material polyethylene for the disinfection of highly corrosive saltwater. In addition, the WEDECO UV technology is extremely efficient. Self-developed, particularly efficient Spektrotherm® UV low-pressure lamps and electronic ballasts specially developed for this type of lamp lead to outstanding characteristics in terms of UV performance and economic efficiency.
Beyond disinfection, UV light is suitable for the destruction of ozone remnants in water, if ozone is used as a primary disinfectant.
Ozone oxidation
The use of ozone is the most effective method for providing high-quality water for fish farming. As the strongest, technically producible oxidising agent it fulfils further functions apart from disinfection, which cannot be treated with other methods or only with difficulty:
- Oxidation of organic and inorganic particles
- Deposit of dissolved substances
- Micro-flocculation of organic substances
- Destabilisation of gelatinous materials
