Ships & Offshore

The element of water is not only the route of transportation in worldwide navigation. It is also required as an important provision and necessary operating resource on ships, yachts as well as offshore platforms. Due to the long transport over the most diverse waterways and seas without natural sources of drinking water, the water carried is subject to special requirements. For the micro-biological treatment of drinking water, ship waste water and ballast water, the pollution free WEDECO UV technology is a sensible alternative to chemical disinfectants or expensive membrane systems. It therefore makes a contribution to the health on board and to the protection of the oceans and their ecological systems.
Micro-biologically harmless drinking or industrial water on ocean and inland vessels has always been a basic condition for every successful passage. The WEDECO UV technology is ideally suitable for providing the precious water in germ-free quality.
The great advantage of UV light compared to other techniques is in the environmentally friendly way in which it works. Viruses, bacteria and parasites are inactivated by a photochemical reaction between the UVC radiation and the genetic information carrier (DNA) of the pathogen within seconds. The pathogen cannot multiply any longer and dies. Since this is a purely physical technique, the pathogen types can also not become resistant to the UV-radiation. No harmful by-products are formed in the water and the natural taste and odour of the water is also preserved.

„Stowaways” in ballast water
Ballast water is taken up by ocean vessels during empty trips for the purpose of stabilisation and for maintaining seaworthiness. When this is done, organisms, algae and micro-organisms find their way into the ballast tanks. In order to prevent these spreading into other offshore ecological systems, ballast water must be treated before it is released into waters.
With suitable WEDECO UV systems in combination with a filtration stage, these „stowaways” can be rendered innocuous effectively and completely. No chemical additives are put into to the water with UV disinfection; the water retains its natural characteristics and no toxic by-products are formed. Besides, there is no intensified formation of corrosion as with disinfection with chlorine or similar chemicals. The space requirement is also considerably lower compared to alternative methods.
