Swimming Pools & Spas

Swimming pools are not only a popular place for adults and children - viruses, bacteria, mold spores, algae and dangerous legionella also feel at home there. The WEDECO UV and ozone technologies are made for eliminating these unloved bathers. Also: UV light and ozone can significantly reduce the addition of chlorine (30 - 80 %) or even make it unnecessary - a decisive advantage for the attractiveness of any private or public swimming pool.
The use of chlorine for water disinfection in swimming pools is to be enjoyed with great caution: Due to the reaction of chlorine with organic and inorganic compounds, by-products form such as chloramines and THM (trihalomethane). Chloramines bring about the typical chlorine smell as well as skin and eye irritation. THM can be taken in through the skin or the lungs and is considered as a trigger for cancer or asthma illnesses. In addition, some parasites such as cryptosporidium and Guardia are already very resistant to this chemical disinfection technique.
Even the dangerous and extremely resistant legionella bacterium can only be fought with high doses of chlorine. The side effects caused by chlorine also increase accordingly. Legionella crops up where heated, stagnant water offers optimal conditions for them to multiply – so potentially in every swimming pool.
Ultraviolet light disinfects without chemicals

Disinfection with UV light works better: Microorganisms are inactivated by a photochemical reaction between the UV-C radiation and the genetic information carrier (DNA) of the pathogen within seconds. The pathogen cannot multiply any longer and dies.
Since this is a purely physical technique, the pathogen types can also not become resistant to the UV-radiation. And neither the natural taste nor the odour of the water is impaired by the UV-radiation. Moreover, ultraviolet light leads to an effective destruction of chloramines, and the typical chlorine smell is reduced significantly.
Overview of the advantages
- Reliable disinfection of viruses, bacteria, parasites, mould and algae
- Protection from legionella
- Drastically reduced chlorine requirement
- No formation of dangerous by-products
- No environmental impact
Ozone oxidises pollutants
The very reactive ozone gas has been successfully used for more than 30 years in the treatment of swimming pool water. As the strongest, technically producible oxidising agent it is outstandingly suited for disinfection (removal of viruses and bacteria) as well as for the oxidation of organic pollutants. Residues of soap, sweat, body creams and oils are also effectively destroyed with ozone.
Thanks to the environmentally friendly way in which it works, it is used as a primary disinfectant in many swimming pools as a chlorine substitute, since it disintegrates into oxygen during reaction and forms significantly fewer by-products.
UV and ozone - the ideal couple
In practice, UV technology and ozone oxidation prove to be an ideal couple. If ozone is used as a primary disinfectant, the UV-radiation ensures the destruction of ozone residue in the water.
