Biological wastewater treatment does not allow for the inactivation of pathogen bacteria, viruses, parasites nor the removal of micropollutants which is necessary for a comprehensive health and environmental protection, even if combined with final clarification and filtration. The WEDECO UV and ozone technologies are suitable methods for this advanced treatment – sustainable and absolutely reliable.
In applications where wastewater can find its way into bathing water or drinking water, or is reused (for example in agriculture), more advanced treatment of wastewater is absolutely necessary. Even the subtle accumulation of micropollutants in our water circulation such as pharmaceutical residue, hormones or pesticides can only be prevented by certain treatment technologies.

Natural disinfection without chemicals
Irradiation with UV light is a tried-and-tested, recognised and environmentally friendly method for disinfecting waste water. Microorganisms are inactivated by a photochemical reaction between UV-C radiation and the genetic information carrier (DNA) of the pathogen within seconds. Unlike chemical disinfection however, the UV irradiation creates no harmful by-products.
The disinfection with UV light has two important advantages compared to chemical methods: On the one hand, a more effective disinfection (particularly against viruses) and on the other hand, a much lower space requirement thanks to substantially shorter contact and retention times.
Ozone for special tasks
Ozone oxidation proves to be a genuine problem solver even in the case of “tough pollutants”. Harmful substances, colours, odours and microorganisms are destroyed directly by oxidation, without harmful chlorinated by-products or considerable residue being created. Ozone is successfully used in wastewater treatment for the removal of tensides, phenols, cyanides, AOXs and discolorations. Ozone is also an efficient technique for the destruction of COD (chemical oxygen demand) and endocrine substances. Moreover, many synergies result in the area of wastewater treatment such as the disinfection of viruses and bacteria, sewage sludge disintegration or the treatment of unwanted odours, for example in the case of wastewater treatment plant locations near residential areas.
